How Would You Handle The "Brass Horde"

During the age of the Mongol Empire, the Mongol armies spread across Eastern Europe and Russia raping, pillaging and basically leaving whatever was left as a waste land. These invaders were come to be known as "The Golden Horde."

Fast forward today and we remember the LA Riots, New Orleans looting, I even experienced it myself during the 1989 San Francisco earthquake. During all the confusion and the aftermath instantly after the quake, masses started stealing from the shops who's windows were broken and all within an arm's reach.  It got so bad that in some areas a "shoot to kill" order was issued. The earthquake struck at approximately 5:00PM, that night turned into hell on earth in some parts of the San Francisco bay area.

The horde was released.

In the prepper community we see " the Golden Horde" as a loosely organized mass of urban refugees streaming out of the cities in search of food and shelter after a natural disaster or social / financial collapse. Like locus, this mindless mass could possibly overwhelm local defenses,  "raping and pillaging" the country suburban area and stripping it of many of its resources while destroying everything in its path.

Now this sounds bad and is a situation that would most likely take place in the movies, but in real life a situation like this does not happen… in most cases.

But to be honest I am not worried about a mindless mass of people. These people are hungry  and pretty much are acting on instinct. They are not going to be very well organized, and lack really any true leadership. Some may be armed, but not willing to really "take a bullet" when it comes down to the rubber meeting the road.

It is the group's "mass" that gives the "horde" its power.

Aggressively confront then divide the mass and it will quickly give up and move on to another "easier" target.

But who I am worried about are the bugged out  Rambo wanna-be's traveling in their RVs who's idea of preparedness is cases of ammo, Spam & Budweiser.

Let me introduce to you...The Brass Horde.

The Brass Hordes are small groups of people, probably all deer hunting buddies who go out and play paint ball on the weekends and call it survival training. Now, nothing against deer hunting and paintball, I am a hunter as well; can't say I have played paintball though. Now airsoft wars are fun, but I am digressing here.

What these folks have neglected for maintaining good health and welfare, they have made up by being obnoxiously well armed. Thing is when the Spam and Budweiser runs out,  they will turn to what they love most their guns and ammo.

These are the groups I worry about.

Here is a very interesting story, one that is real world. The author who goes by the handle "BigBear" painted a very realistic picture.

After reading this, I want to ask you, how would you REALLY handle this situation?

I would like for you to hear your "end to the story" comments, so please post them below.

The Brass Horde

The Brass Horde at least tried to prepare.  They had a plan to leave the city, some supplies and a large stockpile of weapons. Their intent was to relocate to a remote site as a group and hunt for food. The small group is made up of family and close friends occupying the trailers used to escape the city. Unfortunately their resources are limited and unwisely thought out.

At first they have good luck taking a deer and several rabbits for a stew, all looks good. But after a week or so their water rations are getting low and their expensive filter systems are useless on the frozen lake. They are able to melt some water over the fire pit and on propane stoves but this consumes critical resources. Most of their daily man hours are spent collecting and transporting ice blocks to melt for water. The meat is running low, they are exhausted.

The Horde elders decide that a couple of the women should visit a nearby cabin and ask to fill their water jugs. The established local, not wanting to seem rude, invites the ladies into the warm cabin...the aroma of fresh baked bread fills the air. Warm cinnamon rolls and hot coffee are served over light conversation next to the wood stove. The ladies fill their water jugs from the solar powered well, thanked the local and reluctantly venture back out into the cold, it was the first time they had truly been warm since leaving the city.

That evening the women huddled around the fire telling the others of their days experience. A strong north wind brought frigid temperatures and a heavy snow started around sundown...the Horde retired to their campers to weather the night.

Then the propane runs out!

The temperatures quickly plunge after the heater went out in the far north trailer of the circled compound. The father whose survival skills were honed by many hours watching the discovery channel, decided to start a small wood fire in the oven to keep him and his wife warm. The ensuing inferno consumed two of their trailers and damaged the other six as over 10,000 rounds of ammo cooked off in the conflagration.

In the blinding snow the elders huddled for warmth around the smoldering ruins of their grand scheme...they knew what had to be done. After arming themselves and securing the women folk in the remaining heated camper, the horde took off for the neighbors cabin. The howling winds of the blizzard masked their plunder as they made off with six twenty pound bottles of propane, a chainsaw and five gallons of gas. The blowing snow filled their tracks as they retreated back to the compound confident in their escape.

Unbeknown to the Brass Horde the local had witnessed the entire thing from the warmth of the bedroom after being alerted by his growling dogs. Shouldering his gun he realized that confrontation was dangerous against eight heavily armed men and there was a good change he would die if shooting started. The local also realized that this was the first of many visits by the armed bandits who, made confident by their guns, would steal what they failed to store through proper preparation.

So he….. started baking cookies.

"Good morning, I have fresh cookies and hot coffee" shouted the local from his truck as he pulled into the Horde's compound. "You all look like you could use a treat on this cold morning" he continued. The men leerily looked at each other assuming that the local man had not yet discovered the robbery and was just being a good neighbor. The local waved and yelled "God Bless You" as he drove away. Over their snacks and wicked strong coffee the Horde laughed at how easy a target this cookie baking fairy would be...

Looking through the rifle scope from his vantage point in on the hill he saw no movement...the last one fell several hours ago.

Later that evening the local man returned to the compound, collected the bodies and placed them neatly in the largest trailer. Gathering the stolen items plus the Hordes guns and abundant ammunition for barter he proceeded to pour gas in each of the remaining campers then burned everything to the ground. Cyanide in the coffee and cookies.

A heavy snow that night covered over the remains and the evident "mass suicide" was not discovered until later that springs. It was chalked up to collapse related hysteria...no further investigation.

My Own Thoughts

How would you have handled the group and the situation?

Remember there are no police that are going to come to the rescue.

What would you have done differently?

Now this one struck me hard. Why? Because I am a God fearing Christian who has submitted his life to the Lord.

Several verses in the Bible that come to my mind is...

1 Timothy 5:8(KJV)  But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.

Exodus 22:2 (KJV)  If a thief be found breaking up, and be smitten that he die, there shall no blood be shed for him.

What Do I Believe?

In the simplest terms, a believer is absolutely justified in the use of deadly force if faced with a grave threat to him or his own family or members of his own church (his extended family). Not to do so is a violation of both Jewish and Christian's reverence for life.

Deadly force does not mean that the results necessarily ends in death. It may be simply the presentation of the weapon that provides the necessary deterrent against violence on the part of the offender.

Christianity is not pacifism. There are pacifists who are Christians, but a clear reading of Scripture doesn't imply pacifism at all. We seek peace and pursue it; we earnestly prefer to avoid violence, but we don't stick our heads in the sand. We live in a world where violence is commonplace; it's been that way since the fall.

Violent people have absolutely no restraint on their behavior; a believer needs to be at least as aggressive in defending himself and others. Whatever it takes. If you have to shoot someone and drop them to the ground, that's most unfortunate, but you didn't ask to be attacked.

Please go to the "COMMENTS" section and tell me what you thought and how you would handle it.

Finally, do you have a pit in your stomach like I did after I read that?

  1. Yes, I had a pit in my stomach but I would have done the same or something similar as the local did simply because people of that mindset who would steal from someone else just because they have something the thieves didn't take the time to properly prep themselves for would have no qualms in continuing to steal until they decided to kill the occupants of the cabin in order to take it over themselves. It is best to catch the would-be thieves unawares than to allow your family to be robbed and then probably killed. If the people had been honest and forthcoming about their difficulties, I would have done what I could to help them, possibly even offer them a place to winter out provided I had prepared for such an occurrence. They drew first blood when they stole from the local.

    Just my 2 cents worth

  2. I was a very violent man before I came to the Lord, with a very evil twitch.I know what my flesh reaction would be.

  3. Wow, well I have a great inner conflict going on. Do I turn the other cheek and let God be my vindicator? Thou shalt not kill did not mean during warfare as the Lord sent out many to do just that against His enemies in the old testament, but Jesus brought a New Testament. I pray the Holy Spirit would give me discernment to avoid the violence but I know His grace is sufficient for me and the intention of my heart is what HE will judge.

  4. I don't think I would have poisoned the horde. Been scared out of my wits for sure, but honestly I am starting to think we need to start praying as the early believers did, that G-d supernaturally protect us and give us the knowledge on how to handle the situation.
I am by far not a pacifistic kind of person, but where we live, guns, knives and such are very controlled. Brute force can get one some things, but not everything. But, it is cases like this one that take me back to the Mennonite teaching I had received and realise that sometimes when the armies (or militias) come calling to rape, steal and kill -- our only hiding place is with G-d himself.

If the "horde" were honest with us, I would by far do my best to assist without putting myself in a place that I could be further taken advantage of. If they were not forthcoming, I would perhaps let them know we haven't much either, but they were welcome to stay and make use of the heat if they also provided to assist. If not, I am sure there are ways to deal with them amicably with the rest of the community.

  5. Justified the local was, they would keep coming back bolder and bolder. I guess I would pray and see if the Lord would give me peace to do that. That which they took would be a Major setback for the local.A
trogan horse would be a logical response versus a head to head confrontation with such poor odds.We are talking survival in a wild west senario

  6. I would have to agree with the tactics of the local man, given that the "survivalists" chose to steal first without even trying to get assistance. The odds would have been far too great to warrent a try. The Bible is rife with accounts of godly men taking extreme measures (Granted, mostly in the Old Testament.) But even Paul used the ongoing fued between the Pharisees and Sadducees to disrupt his trial. True, he was not using deadly force, but the principle is the same of using any means necessary to continue. In the circumstances surrounding this scenareo, there would be no doubt that inaction would have resulted in the local family's deaths.

We have studied for decades about various aspects of survival, and prior to Y2K we did get serious about it. That was when I bought my first rifle. I position was that we would share what we had with whomever the Lord brought to our door, but I'd be damned if I would let someone just take it.

I would also like to share - if this post will allow it - a report I wrote, bringing together everything we had learned about survival. I finished it late 2007, so some of the "news" items will be dated, but 99% of the information is still good. It can be found online (free) here: http://www.docstoc.com/docs/272551/Springboard-for-Survival

You can view it without trouble, but you need to join docstoc if you want to download it - but that's free also.

  7. As Jesus Himself said in the bible, if you don't have a sword, go sell your cloak and buy one.

I don't know why people remember the admonition to "turn the other cheek" and not the one about buying a sword.

That quote is what sent me to the gun shop to buy myself a 9mm. If it comes to a choice between shooting some people trying to steal the things I have bought and prepared for my family, and my family's survival, I choose to protect my family.

I would hope it never comes to that, but I'm prepared if there is no other choice.

  8. I believe we are very much headed in this direction as we have many people depending on the Government to provide.
The oil spill in Louisiana and Florida is going to cost this country in cleanup funds and is destroying The Shrimp industry. There is a drought in California destroying crops and a freeze in Florida destroyed crops. if we run out of food, look out.

  9. I am crucified with Christ... and I know that my body is His temple, to care for and to keep. If I depart my flesh today or tomorrow, it matters not to me, but to live in the Spirit where to die is gain. I have survived cancer because He chose to provide treatment, but I recognize that He bought me, 'lock, stock and barrel', on the Cross. So I live only for Him, and await the departure from my flesh that will liberate my soul for the next resurrection. I will not protect my flesh, but will call upon Him to do as He wills with His property. I would allow others to see that my flesh profits nothing, and I would surrender it, standing only upon the mighty name of Jesus. While He prolongs my stay, I give Him the glory publicly and without fear. Trust and obey; and do not defend your mortal flesh...What are you protecting? Eternal life is NOW and always walking with Him. These things must come to pass, and then the Judgment. Woe to those who neglect the salvation of their souls.

  10. WOW! This aritcle did leave a knot in the pit of my stomach. I actually read a book several years ago about a scenario quite like this in that the "horde" came to attack after a major disaster, and the homeowner had kept protection for himself and his family and a way to fend off marauders. The "horde" is what I consider the attackers mentioned. I would defend myself and family to the best of my ability if it came to an attack versus someone genuinely asking for help. But, yes prayer is essential, because all the "protection" that man has in the world will not keep you safe unless God deems it to be that way. If He calls you home, defending your family, I do not believe you are condemned by Him for it. Hard thoughts, though. Good to pray and prepare your heart and home ahead of time.

  12. I would not poison them as Thou Shalt not murder seems important to God. If it is important to God, then it is in our benefit not to indulge in it or it will land on our head. I am not opposed to laying strategically placed traps though for animals that someone who is up to no good might get caught up in if they were where they should not be. As far as the stolen stuff, I learned a while back that I can prepare & that is good, but ultimately, God is the source of my supply & He has infinate ways of bringing us what we need, yes, even when the world does not have an answer. I understand this well. I live in extreme circumstances. My story would bring a tear to a glass eyeball, and people often cannot believe I am still standing. When they ask me how, I can honestly tell them that it is the grace of God, the mercy of God and His complete salvation that even finds me supplies of the most randomly impossible things I need to keep my family going.
I think praying in faith is the key here. After all, according to the Word, there is more with us than there are with them & people need to see that James was not saying that 'You do not receive because you don't ask' for nothing. He wasn't just talking to make his head roar or to fill up some blank spots in the bible.
I guess, in a lot of ways we already live like this. We have had a lot stolen from us by people because we are vunerable, but the key is as Jesus says, FORGIVENESS, PRAY FOR THOSE WHO DISPITEFULLY USE YOU, BELIEVE ON THE LORD JESUS CHRIST & YOU AND YOUR HOUSEHOLD WILL BE SAVED, GOD PROVIDES ALL OUR NEEDS ACCORDING TO HIS RICHES & GLORY IN CHRIST JESUS. Remember to tell the mountain to be lifted up and to be cast into the sea, and it will obey you.

The answer lies in doing what Jesus says to do. Tell the sycomine tree to be lifted up & be thou cast into the sea and it should obey you.

These are the Word's of Jesus & He has proved to me time & time again that they are 100% true.

If you doubt, go search out the testimony of the Jews towards angelic salvation during the 6 day war, or the manifestation of the salvation of angels God sent to Britian when they had days of national calls to prayer instigated by Winston Churchill.

We live this, we are learning more and more that God's Word is TRUE... angels ARE ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who are heirs of salvation.

Are you an heir of salvation?

If so, you have the right by inheritance to ask and expect this.

Jesus said that He could have called 12 legions of angels to his defence. We are the body of Christ he has left to continue His work. He has given us ALL HIS AUTHORITY & POWER through HIS NAME.

  13. Additionally, Jesus I think was refering to situations like this when he said that if someone takes your coat, let him have your garment also, and to turn the other cheek. I think if we are trusting in God through faith for provision, and not through fear, than this question is completely removed. Either we are walking with Christ or we are operating in fear. Not an easy walk, the hardest part being that if we get it right, not to judge others who don't because it is the Holy Spirit that guides us, not of our own merit.

  14. Reading over these responses, there are two basic responses to this scenario: Protect our family against adversaries any cost, or, Let God provide for all our needs. I for one strive to trust God loves us much more than the sparrow, but there is one issue that has not been addressed. Say 1 family comes to your door ASKING for help. You do the Christian thing and help them. Then another family comes knocking, again, quite respectful and God fearing people, you want to help them too. Soon you realize, the stores you had so thoughtfully prepared for YOUR family is being consumed much faster than planned. Knowing I need to place worldly trust in my Saviour is easy to say, but difficult to live. THAT is the knot in my stomach, not how to deal with those who would wish to do harm or steal. CSG

  15. Very good point, but more & more I am learning to lean on the Word of God and believe we really are meant to be doing what Jesus said.
He said that we would do the things he did and greater things also.
Jesus fed the 5000 on two fish & 3 barley loaves. He also said that if we would believe, we would see the glory of God.
I think we will see greater & greater manifestations of God's provision if we would learn to stand on the Word of God in complete faith. The more we do this, the more we enable God's power to manifest His promises.

  16. George Muller is a good example of this. Do a search on the web. This God fearing man started several orphanages & bible schools with no resources, just on praying directly to God in faith. He had a policy of not telling anyone the needs for the orphanage, but just taking it directly to God in prayer.
His book tells of many occassions where there was simply no food to feed the orphans.
He didn't tell them, he just told the 100 children to sit at the table and give thanks for what God was going to provide for them to eat.
Next thing, there was a knock at the door and a baker brought in plenty of bread as a donation and a grocer brought in fruit. This happened multiple times. I have found the same result in the ministry God has given me, including the exact money right down to the last cent mysteriously turning up in my letterbox anonymously for the bibles & tracts I desperately needed for some new people who wanted to do a Christianity explained course with me. I did not have the money for them and neither did they, yet someone sent me the cheque for the exact amount I needed and said they had heard about my ministry sharing the gospel with the disabled, and wanted to contribute. There is no way they could have known what I needed to order and the total came to exactly $310. The amount on the cheque.

  17. First, I must use the Romans 7:15 disclaimer: "For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do."

In the natural, I see no issue with what the man did. I admittedly cheered in my flesh as I read the ending. However, my "spirit" wasn't moved. The Bible teaches that anything not of faith is sin. I believe there is a line between self defense and self preservation. If someone is threatening the life of me or my family, they are as good as dead. To believe someone has threatened my "future" well being and survival is a faith issue, and not worth a life.

No criminal is beyond God's redemption, and no victim is beyond God's protection. Remember, we are the sheep, and HE is the shepherd. I would hope to leave the wolf killing up to Him. They may have caught me by surprise, but they sure didn't catch my God off guard.

Again, this is my "armchair" response. In the heat of the moment, I can also smell some freshly baked cookies.

  18. In the garden of Gethsemine, Peter sliced off the ear of the high priests servant.
Jesus rebuked him and told him that he that lives by the sword will die by the sword.
In my life I have learned to take the words of Jesus seriously. When I don't, I get myself into a pickle. I don't want the pickle he warns about here.
I believe God will extend the work of our hands. Yes, we are to be wise and good stewards, but like the widow woman that God used to sustain Elijah, he will take our almost empty barrel of meal when we are prepared to share it as she was and feed us all. I doubt the nearly empty barrel of meal would have fed her & her son if she had denied Elijah's request for her to make him a little cake first.
God is the same yesterday, today & tomorrow & God is no preferrer of persons. What He did for that little widow woman and her son, He will do for us if we will learn to trust Him.
Seriously, I think our own storage cannot be depended on, only God is dependable.
We have to be careful to not be trusting soley in the work of our hands, but more, that we trust in God to keep us as He has always done for those who will believe.
